Retin-A

Does Retin-A really work?  Here is a basic run-down of what this stuff is all about:

Retin-A, or Tretinoin, is the acid form Vitamin A and is often used as an acne treatment and sometimes to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.  It is a fairly powerful chemical and has been shown to effectively reduce the appearance of acne and scarring in some cases.  However, several nasty side-effects have been associated with this product and one should use caution when looking into using it.

A few things to consider:

  • When used, dryness of the affected skin may occur. More sensitive patients may also experience redness, scaling, itching, and burning.
  • When using Retin-A, it is best to start with a small amount and gradually increase in order to allow the skin to adjust.
  • Retin-A can react negatively with a number of other skin and hair-care products. One should consult their doctor when beginning a round of treatment.

Prices on Retin-A (Tretinoin) products can run anywhere from $40 to $140, but you will basically be getting the same chemical either way.  It has worked for some people, however the side effects can be rather harsh.  I generally do not recommend Retin-A.
