Metrogel

Is Metrogel right for your acne problem?  Here is a quick run-down of what Metrogel is all about.

Metrogel is a prescription cream with the active ingredient metronidazole.  This is an antibiotic that helps to prevent the bacterial growth which can sometimes cause rosacea, or adult acne.  Many antibiotics have been proven as effective acne treatments.  However, one big concern I have with metronidazole is that it is listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a potential human carcinogen (cancer-causer) and has been shown to cause cancer in experimental animals.

Metronidazole is also comparatively less effective than other antibiotics and is just as expensive.  Another important thing to know is that it targets rosacea (facial reddening) specifically and is not as effective for the more common acne vulgaris.

Unless rosacea is specifically your problem and you are willing to take a big risk in the long-run, I do not recommend Metrogel.
