The function of the sebaceous gland is to protect the surface of the skin by lubricating the hair with the oil that it produces. Now this is where all the acne related problems start, whereby the sebaceous oil or sebum due to various reasons forms plugged pores and lesions. These lesions are called pimples. Another term that is commonly used to refer these lesions is zits. Though acne is commonly found on the face, neck chest and back, they can occur anywhere on the body except the palms and the sole where there are no pores.
When the sebaceous glands produce sebum it oozes out to the surface of the skin along the hair line. This oily substance or sebum that reaches the surface is supposed to be absorbed by the skin to keep itself fresh. If our pores are not fully open the oily substance cannot flow out to the surface. This does not stop the production of sebum, so excessive sebum is accumulated in that particular pore or pores that are blocked. When this happens the bacteria that are already present in the hair canals which in normal circumstance are harmless start acting on the excessive oil that is blocked within the pore and it serves as a good breeding ground for the bacteria and thereby it multiplies. This blocked oil infested with bacteria moves to the surface of the skin causing inflammation. So your pimple is nothing but a mixture of sebum and bacteria. When this happens in a number of pores of your skin then the whole area gets infested with pimples and lesions.
