Causes of Acne

Acne is not only a problem for teenagers, but for many adults as well.  So what causes it?

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by “dirt.”  The most typical cause of acne is the abnormal shedding of dead skin cells around our hair follicles.  As our skin is covered with hair follicles and when one becomes blocked by dead skin, oil and dead cells build up and can cause swelling and redness.  Other common causes of acne are hormonal changes, which often happen in puberty and in changing estrogen levels in women.

Whatever the cause, there are effective treatments out there that can help to reduce the build-up of dead skin cells and to keep your pores and hair follicles clear.
