Benzaclin

Will Benzaclin clear up your acne?  There are a thousand different products out there, so its important to know the facts in order to compare.  Here is a basic review of Benzaclin.

Benzaclin is a prescription acne treatment that combines two ingredients:  Benzoyl peroxide and Clindamycin.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide – This chemical is used to kill bacteria in the skin as well as to dry up excess oil. Though it is often effective, it should not be used long term and in many cases it can have unpleasant side effects, such as red, dry, flaky skin.
  • Clindamycin – This is an antibiotic which helps to kill the bacteria that grows naturally on the skin and can cause acne. Clindamycin is more effective combined with other agents than it is alone. Some side effects are itching, diarrhea, or nausea.

What most concerns me about this product is the use of Benzoyl Peroxide.  Though it has been in use as an acne treatment for years and is generally considered safe in low concentrations, it can be extremely harsh on the skin and can cause prolonged redness and irritation.  It also can bleach clothing and can cause severe pain if it gets in your eyes.  Recently it is has also been investigated as a possible tumor-promoting agent.  It may work to clear up your acne for a while, but I’d rather have acne than a tumor!

I do not recommend Benzaclin. Not only is it a hassle to get a prescription, but the risk and side-effects can be a worse pain.
